Zelensky formally removes head of Ukrainian security services’ cyber division

Dismissal of Ukraine’s Cybersecurity Department Head Amid Financial Investigation

The head of Ukraine’s cybersecurity department, Illia Vitiuk, has been formally dismissed from his post following an investigation into his personal finances. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a decree confirming Vitiuk’s discharge, but no additional details were provided.

Vitiuk was suspended from his duties earlier in April and reassigned to serve in combat while anti-corruption authorities looked into his suspiciously luxurious lifestyle. A report by the Ukrainian investigative outlet Slidstvo.Info revealed that Vitiuk and his family owned real estate they couldn’t afford with their official salaries.

After the investigation was published, there were allegations that an SBU employee instructed the military enlistment office to draft the journalist behind the investigation into the armed services as retaliation. The authorities have not disclosed the results of the investigation or who will succeed Vitiuk.

Vitiuk is a prominent figure in Ukrainian cybersecurity, known for speaking at international conferences and providing insights into cyberattacks. This incident is not the first involving financial abuse in the Ukrainian cybersecurity sector, as two high-ranking officials were dismissed in November for suspected embezzlement of state funds.

This case highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in government positions, especially in critical sectors like cybersecurity. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
