In a rare show of bipartisan unity, U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell and Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers have introduced a groundbreaking compromise bill that could finally give Americans control over their digital data. The American Privacy Rights Act, championed by the two longtime Washington lawmakers, aims to establish data privacy as a consumer right and set federal standards for the collection and use of personal information.

The proposed legislation, which has garnered industry support from the likes of Microsoft’s Brad Smith, would allow consumers to sue companies that violate their digital privacy rights. It also seeks to eliminate the current patchwork of state laws on data protection and create a national standard for rules and protections.

The need for such legislation is clear, as the unchecked collection and sale of personal data has led to alarming consequences. From the sale of sensitive health records to the tracking of individuals’ geolocation data, the current state of digital privacy leaves much to be desired.

Other lawmakers would do well to follow Cantwell and McMorris Rodgers’ lead and support this important piece of legislation.
