iSchool Cybersecurity Expert from Syracuse University Warns that Recent Cyberattacks on Water Systems are Just the Beginning
Government Agencies Strengthening Cybersecurity Measures: Expert Commentary and Media Tip Sheets
Government agencies are ramping up their cybersecurity measures in response to the increasing threat of cyberattacks on critical infrastructure. The Environmental Protection Agency recently announced that it will be conducting more inspections of water facilities that may be vulnerable to cyber threats.
According to cybersecurity expert Lee McKnight, state-sponsored actors are increasingly targeting outdated and vulnerable water supply systems. In fact, 70% of water systems failed to demonstrate basic cybersecurity practices during recent inspections. McKnight emphasizes the urgent need for both public and private sector organizations to prioritize cybersecurity in order to prevent potentially devastating attacks on water supplies.
McKnight also highlights the importance of providing comprehensive training in cybersecurity for IT workers and the wider workforce in the water supply sector. With cyber attackers having a high probability of finding vulnerable targets within water systems, it is crucial for the industry to invest in cybersecurity measures to protect against future attacks.
