Niagara County and Local Municipalities Receive Federal Grants for Homeland Security Programs

Niagara County and two local municipalities have been awarded a share of $13 million in federal grant awards through the State Homeland Security Program. These grants will be used to enhance preparedness and response capabilities for first responders, including specialized law enforcement and fire emergency response teams.

A total of 78 cities, towns, villages, and counties across New York state received funding through seven unique grant programs. The grants will support vital training and equipment for first responders, as well as enhance the protection of critical infrastructure and cybersecurity posture.

In a competitive grant opportunity, Niagara County was awarded funds in two categories. The Cybersecurity Grant Program awarded $50,000 each to the Town of Lockport and Niagara Falls, while the Explosive Detection Canine Team Grant Program provided $15,000 to Niagara County.

The Cybersecurity Grant Program aims to enhance the ability of eligible counties, cities, towns, and villages to protect, detect, identify, respond to, and recover from cyber incidents. The funds can be used for equipment, training, planning, and exercise costs.

The Explosive Detection Canine Team Grant Program supports local law enforcement agencies in developing and enhancing their explosive detection canine capabilities. These teams provide a visible, proactive police presence in areas of mass gathering, transportation centers, and critical infrastructure sites.

Overall, the grants will be used to protect and secure critical infrastructure, mass gathering events, and enhance local governments’ cybersecurity capabilities. The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services manages the grants, with approximately $90.9 million distributed to critical programs in the past.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the importance of emergency preparedness in responding to crises and keeping New Yorkers safe. Commissioner Jackie Bray of the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services highlighted the grants as providing first responders with the latest technology, tools, and training to protect communities.

The grants demonstrate a commitment to enhancing security and preparedness across New York state, ensuring that first responders have the resources they need to effectively respond to any threats that may arise.
