WMATA website experiences hours-long shutdown due to cybersecurity attack
WMATA Cybersecurity Attack Under Investigation by TSA
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is currently investigating a cyber security attack against Metro, as reported by WMATA on Tuesday. The attack, known as a ‘denial-of-service attack,’ occurred on May 7 and resulted in the shutdown of the WMATA website for two hours. However, customer and employee data remained secure, and services such as the SmarTrip app and mobile transactions were not affected.
According to Palo Alto Networks, a denial-of-service attack is designed to make a machine or network inaccessible to users. Metro’s cybersecurity team is now working with the TSA to identify the perpetrators behind the attack.
