Earlier this year, Mayo Clinic researchers reported that a new AI model had successfully demonstrated the ability to detect early stage pancreatic cancer. With advancements like this, AI has the potential to save thousands of lives and make a positive impact on the world. A recent MITRE-Harris poll on AI found that only 39% of respondents believe today’s AI is safe and secure, down from 48% in a previous poll. This decline in trust coincides with the launch of ChatGPT, a large language model developed by OpenAI, which reportedly costs $700,000 a day to run.

The high cost of developing and operating AI technology poses a barrier to entry for many organizations, meaning that much of the major development in AI will come from Big Tech companies such as Google, Meta, and Microsoft. However, consumer trust in these companies has also been declining in recent years.

To rebuild trust in AI and Big Tech, companies must improve communication with users and respect user data rights. This includes publishing transparent and concise privacy policies, informing users about the risks associated with AI products, and respecting and completing user data rights requests.

By prioritizing transparency, communication, and data privacy, Big Tech can work towards rebuilding consumer trust and ensuring that AI technology is developed and used responsibly. As we enter the next generation of innovation, these steps will be crucial in winning back consumer trust and ensuring the positive impact of AI on society.
