Texas A&M University-Commerce Takes Lead in Hosting International Event on Digital Privacy

Texas A&M University-Commerce played a pivotal role in organizing and hosting the Digital Rhetorical Privacy Collective’s (DRPC) first Privacy Week, a global initiative aimed at sparking discussions on digital privacy and surveillance. The event, which ran from January 22 through 26, brought together scholars and academics from various disciplines to delve into the complexities of data privacy in today’s digital age.

Founded in 2022 by Dr. Charles Woods, an assistant professor at A&M-Commerce, the DRPC seeks to bridge the gap between different academic fields to address the pressing issues surrounding digital privacy and surveillance. As technologies continue to advance and data privacy concerns grow, the need for interdisciplinary conversations becomes more apparent.

Privacy Week, held simultaneously with Data Privacy Week, saw participation from five universities across the U.S., including A&M-Commerce. The event featured panel discussions, workshops, student demonstrations, and a keynote panel, all aimed at fostering a deeper understanding of digital privacy issues.

With 18 scholars from 14 institutions presenting at the event, Privacy Week drew a diverse group of participants, including international scholars. Dr. Woods expressed pride in the event’s success and hopes to make it an annual occurrence, pending funding availability.

As the DRPC continues its mission to promote discussions on digital privacy, A&M-Commerce professors like Dr. Gavin Johnson are actively involved in the collective’s efforts. With a focus on ethical considerations surrounding privacy and surveillance, the DRPC aims to empower educators and students to navigate the complexities of the digital landscape.
